Sunny day quickly turned cloudy – never got warm so I pretty much stayed inside. Did some writing, emails, laundry, and ironing. Chrissy came over for a few hours and did her online classes. I mixed up cinnamon roll dough as it’s a request for the boys on Wednesday. Also made potato soup.

Ran over to the store to get supplies to make small curtains for the basement window. The sun shines in and reflects off the TV and it’s hard to see. That will probably be a Sunday project after I listen to a few of my ‘guys’.

I will share Greg’s message from Vanderbilt today. BELLOWS – we need to fan our faith into flames; take what we have and feed it. Run your race – we all run, but run to win. Make the effort. Don’t run aimlessly; seek the crown that doesn’t fade. Churches are full of unbelieving people – we need to be a strong witness and a good servant. 1) Be discriminating; we have endless options so choose carefully a) meditate day and night b) pray c) give d) fast e) fellowship – encourage, and be fed. Love one another. 2) Be deliberate – calculate what’s good and bad 3) Be determined in what you do. a) transformation; build Christlike character/honesty b) in your relationship with Jesus. Keep moving, keep praying (especially for your kids) , keep looking for the lost, keep growing, keep running the race. Fan your faith!

On this day in 1773 Westmoreland County was formed from Bedford County; Hanna’s Town was named as the first county seat. In 1929 President Calvin Coolidge established the Grand Teton National Park, and in 1933 Golden Gate Bridge groundbreaking ceremony took place. In 1935 the Yankees released Babe Ruth and he signs with the Boston Braves. Michael Jackson’s THRILLER album became #1 and stayed there for 37 weeks. Levi Strauss (first company to manufacture blue jeans) was born in 1829, and Herbert Henry Dow (Dow Chemical) in 1866. Fats Domino was born in 1928 and Johnny Cash in 1932. And two of my friends are having birthdays today: Sue Nease (a long time friend from Hempfield Church who is living in Florida) and Eric Yowonske – my cousin Deb’s son-in-law. Happy birthday Sue and Eric – have a great day and a wonderful year!

Ten months from today is Christmas Day – miss you, Bud! Although it’s still cold today, it’s sunny and bright. Warms the spirit! I had a tangle of tasks at both stores this morning, but I find that I like doing things that make me stop and think and reason things through. And mostly I like solving problems. Nate & Dave stopped on the way home from work and took the purple couch down to the shed. So now the Buick is tucked back in the garage.

Tonight was FAFF night at my place. We had our facetime visit with mom, and when Paul said hello she really perked up! She has always thought the world of Paul and he could always cheer her up and make her smile. We watched the first half of the movie, then stopped for dinner: Stouffer’s single-serving lasagna, garlic twists (bread sticks) and salad – with cookies for dessert. Then we watched the rest of the movie. We each got interrupted several times with phone calls but moved right on through and had a great evening. Again, it’s fun to be able to share experiences and actually TALK to people!

Today I will share Micah’s message from Old Mahoning: Just do it! We need to work to serve and please God, not men. We must press on, be diligent, and finish the race. 1) Categories – in relationships – we must practice submission, love, obedience, and work hard. 2) Commandments – Whatever you do, do with your whole heart. Worship is our every day life, not just church. Certainly we will receive rewards for serving God, and reap the blessings, as he is a good master. We will be repaid for wrong, as well. We all have the same standard (Bible) although all do not embrace it. Vengeance and Justice belong to the Lord. Remember that you can’t follow God accidentally – it’s an act of will. So take action – and just DO it!

Micah from Old Mahoning

On this day in 1793 the first US cabinet meeting was held at George Washington’s home. In 1836 Samuel Colt patented the first multi-shot revolving-cylinder revolver, enabling the firearm to be fired multiple times without reloading. In 1862 First Legal Tender Act 1862 is passed by the US Congress, authorizing the United States Note (greenback) into circulation, the first fiat paper money that was legal tender in America. In 1901 US Steel corporation was organized by J P Morgan. Pierre Renoir (Painter and Sculptor), was born in 1841, and George Harrison (Beatles) in 1943. Christopher Wren (architect of St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Wren Building – College of William and Mary in Williamsburg VA) died in 1723 at age 90, and Tennessee Williams (playwright) died at age 71 in 1983. And just got word that Bob Kudzma, former KDKA-TV weatherman, passed away today at age 81. One of the joys of his life (other than the weather) was driving school bus! He was chief meteorologist for 34 years with KDKA.

It was truly a beautiful day! I did the treadmill early, then cleaned my house, which is the standard Wednesday chore. When I finished, I made a fruit salad and watched the end of a great old comedy that I had started last night – Support your Local Sheriff. James Garner is funny and talented and it’s so fun!

James Garner (left) – Support your Local Sheriff!

After my late lunch it was still 62* so I took a long walk around the neighborhood, and stopped to talk to a few neighbors. Amazing that we can finally see the ground! And the little local creeks and streams are full and rushing. I even saw a big red bottle floating down by St. John’s Church Road. If I could have gotten to it I would have checked to see if it had a message! It may have traveled for miles in the melting snow!

Finally a nice day to get outside
Look! Yard! Green! Grass!!!
Way more water than normal….

I just read the report of the armed shooter at Latrobe School. It’s being reported as a prank. I hope they find the one who did that, and that he learns the error of his ways. What a horrid thing to have to go through: teachers, students, SWAT team, police. Can’t imagine what the parents were feeling! Sigh.

I’m sharing Mike’s message from Hempfield – KINDNESS. One of my passions! Kindness is a fruit of the spirit. He started with the story of Ruth/Naomi/Boaz. It was a choice for Ruth to stay with Naomi, and for Boaz to choose to be Ruth’s kinsman redeemer. And look how that turned out. King David came from that lineage. Then the story of Mephibosheth – Jonathan’s son. David searched for him and restored his rightful place as the grandson of King Saul. He didn’t have to do that. Then the Good Samaritan. Who acted as a neighbor? The Levite? The Priest? Both were affiliated with the ‘church’. It was the Samaritan, a natural enemy of the Jews, who went above and beyond to care for a stranger who was left for dead. Being religious is different than being Christ-like. Jesus was kind even when people/we don’t deserve it. We aren’t worthy but Jesus gave his life for us. We need to be kind and compassionate to even those who don’t deserve it. Jesus did – go and do likewise.

Mike from Hempfield

On this day in 1208 St. Francis of Assisi (age 26) received his vocation, and in 1868 the House of Representatives voted 126 to 47 to impeach President Andrew Johnson. In 1981 Prince Charles announced his engagement to Lady Diana Spencer, and Elton John was knighted by Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace in 1998. Robert Fulton (invented the steamboat) died at age 49 in 1815, and Dinah Shore at age 76 in 1994. Wilhelm Grimm (Grimm’s Fairy Tales) was born in 1786 – I watched ‘Ever After’ last night. So fun! And my step-daughter Nancy Burke-King celebrated a birthday today – sending hugs and warm wishes for many more happy years! God bless, and happy birthday! SOMEDAY we will get together!

Today will be a quiet day. Work was not very busy but both stores warned me that sales have picked up! So that’s good news!

I made a salad for lunch, with garlic toast. I’ve been trying to eat healthier, with fruit and veggies and salad.

disclaimer- not my salad. I ATE mine!

The red-turned-yellow house below me that was being renovated was finally put on the market. I checked it out online and there is already a ‘sale pending’ notice. It will be interesting to see who the new neighbors will be.

Yellow house behind me….

Just got word that Westmoreland Manor will open certain units for window visits – Mom’s unit is on the list! So thanks to Kath we have a visit scheduled for next week. It will be so much easier than the facetime visits for Mom.

Today I will share Steve’s message from Maplewood. He will be sharing traditional Lent messages, and this one was Baptism & Temptation. We have to learn to say NO, and deny ourselves. Forty is a core number in scripture: 40 years in a generation, 40 days of rain (Noah), 40 days that Moses was on the mountain, 40 days that Jesus was in the dessert after his baptism, 40 years roaming the dessert waiting to enter the promised land. We need to recognize that our journey is not in our hands – it is spirit-led: 1) LAW – we have no control, and we have to learn how to give up being in control, and to receive what he wants to give us. 2) RENOUNCE – we have to learn how to renounce. We see religion as adding something to our existing life, when actually is should BE a way of life. Jesus renounced some things that were good (food, heaven, etc). Jesus was an ordinary man, and he emptied himself to be like us, but without sin. Life is more than bread – make space for God.

Steve from Maplewood

On this day in 1455 Johannes Gutenberg printed the first Bible (estimated date). In 1927 President Calvin Coolidge created the Federal Radio Commission, and in 1945 US Marines raised an American flag on top of the mountain in Iwo Jima. The first mass inoculation against polio with Jonas Salk vaccine was distributed at an elementary school in Pittsburgh in 1954, and in 1997 NBC shows Schindler’s List completely uncensored (65M viewers). George Frideric Handel (MESSIAH) was born in 1685, Victor Fleming (director for Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind) was born in 1889, and Michael Dell (Dell Computer Technologies) was born in 1965. John Keats (poet) died from TB at age 25 in 1821, Stan Laurel (of Laurel and Hardy) died at age 74 in 1965, and James Herriot (All Creatures Great and Small) died in 1995.

Today we are going to honor the Father of our Country, the Commander in Chief of our revolutionary war armies, and the first president of the ‘United States’. He was born in 1732, and would be 289 years old today. I did a little research and found 11 Little Known Facts about President George Washington.

  1. Washington had only a grade school education. When his father died (GW was 11), his mother taught him to run the farm and he later worked as a surveyor.
  2. At age 22, Washington led a disastrous military skirmish that sparked a world war (At Jumonville, right down the road from here!) He was even called an assassin.
  3. Washington’s first love was the wife of one of his best friends. Sally Fairfax took him under her wing and smoothed the rough edges and taught him how to act in society, deal with the wealthy and powerful, and even dance the minuet.
  4. He did not have wooden teeth. He ruined his teeth cracking walnuts, and new ones were made from pulling the teeth of the poor people or enslaved workers.
  5. He wasn’t always a great general but was an excellent spymaster. The CIA admitted that General Washington was more deeply involved in intelligence operations than any American general-in-chief until Dwight Eisenhower during World War II.
  6. When he stepped down as commander-in-chief he did not want to run the country. He longed to be at Mt. Vernon with his family, his animals, and his crops.
  7. He had no biological children but was a father figure to many. His wife Martha had two children, Jacky and Patsy, whom he adored.
  8. He was really into his animals – he was a mule breeder, and loved birds and dogs, especially hunting dogs with names like Sweet Lips and Madame Moose.
  9. He was pretty cagy about his religious beliefs. Never really made strong statements about his faith.
  10. Had a complicated relationship with slavery. He supported abolition but owned slaves. He freed them upon his death with instructions that they remain with Martha until her death.
  11. He was tough to kill. He had 8 major diseases, almost drowned in a ice-clogged river, survived the massacre at Ft. Necessity, had two horses shot out from under him, and had 4 bullets pierce his clothing. It was a cold turned to epiglottitis that finally got him – but he had made them promise to wait three days to bury him – just in case!

I will share Bram’s message from First Baptist- What do we do now? Jesus told his disciples that he was leaving and they couldn’t come with him. He emphasized what was important to him in his ministry, and they were to carry on the spirit of Jesus’ work. Each one is a part of the body of Christ. The main thing he stressed: LOVE ONE ANOTHER! He left them a new covenant. 1) Love as Jesus loved. 2) loving is evangelistic (share it with others). Preach the gospel at all times, and use words when necessary. 3) “I and the Father are one”. We should be one with one another. We have something important to do to carry on the work of Jesus.

On this day in 1935 ‘The Little Colonel’ with Shirley Temple premiered, with the famous staircase dance. In 1997 Dolly the Sheep: first cloned mammal was announced. Steve Irwin, Crocodile Hunter) was born in 1962 (Died in 2006), and Drew Barrymore in 1975. Andy Warhol died in 1987 at age 58.

We made it out of the deep freeze ok – I think it was 3* at some point. So far as I know, no one had frozen pipes or a distressed heating system – thank heavens! My house made some loud thumps and cracks during the night but nothing that caused alarm. It was wonderful to wake up to sunshine!

A little extreme maybe….

I baked the scones and that was breakfast. I listened to Bram, Mike, Rod, and Paul. Then I took a break and ran the sweeper downstairs. Since it was sunny and a heat wave (35*!) I took a drive over to my little fleatique. Didn’t buy anything but like looking around. There were quite a lot of people there. When I got back I wiped out the seats and floors and doors in the Buick. If it gets as warm as predicted on Wednesday I will wash it.

Kath sent me pictures that mom’s best friend and neighbor growing up colored and sent. Kath is going to mail them to Mom – I know Mom would love knowing that Ruth Martin took time to celebrate their friendship, and that she cherishes the memories that they shared through their lifetimes. God bless them both!

Bee-ing friends!

I will share Paul’s message from River Hill. He’s still on the series ‘A Little Child Will Lead Them’. It was Faith and Trust in Jesus, with the sub-title Eat out with Jesus! It was about the little boy who brought his lunch to Jesus, who then feed 5000 men plus women and children. Jesus will take what little we have and make a miracle. It’s the only miracle recorded in all four gospels (other than the resurrection). What we offer Jesus is always enough if we trust. We may feel insignificant but God keeps you in his mind, and we need to be willing to be used; that little boy was not even counted in the 5000! BUT – he was prepared to spend the day with Jesus. 1) The WORD was taught to the people. Jesus thought they were sheep without a shepherd, and had compassion. 2) Disciples overemphasized the problem They wanted to send the people away to get food. They forgot that Jesus was God’s son! 3) Jesus fed the crowd and had leftovers, and he will use whatever we bring him. Weren’t there others in the crowd who had food and would not share? How many miracles are denied because we will not share with Jesus. They had the time, skills and money – Jesus said, “YOU feed them” and they did! Don’t underestimate the Master; nothing is impossible for God – it’s up to OUR FAITH. God is a big God – Jesus already knew what would happen. What is impossible with man is possible with God. Be willing to trust God with what you have. Give and it will be multiplied. Jesus will change the world through us – from ordinary to extraordinary!

Paul from River Hill

On this day in 1990 the Batman theme by Danny Elfman won a Grammy for the best instrumental at the 32nd awards. Kelsey Grammer was born in 1955, Jennifer Love Hewitt in 1979. Billy Graham died in 2018 at age 99 – what a great man of God he was, and his legacy lives on. In 1807 US President Martin Van Buren married his high school sweetheart Hannah Hoes, and in 1952 Elizabeth married Michael Wilding (her second marriage; she was 19).

VERY cold again this morning – ‘feels like’ was 3* when I left the house at 8:00am. Ginny and I met at Bob Evans in New Stanton for breakfast. We always do a lot of sharing, a lot of laughing, and our share of eating! I love hearing her Charlie and Gracie (Poodle puppies) stories. And we caught up on each other’s families and work and of course: COVID! Seems to be the topic of most conversations…

And I found my rug! Greensburg’s store said they had 2, but then cancelled my online order. Delmont said they had 4, but cancelled my online order. Norwin said they didn’t have any (but I’m stubborn!) but I ordered thru them and they filled the order in less than 3 hours! Walmart is CRAZY!!! But I’m happy!

I ushered at the Greensburg Civic Center for Bear – the play was I DO! I DO! I DO! I DO! It was almost entirely a musical; very little talking. The two performers were very good. The theater wasn’t crowded but they do live-stream now so they sold many more tickets that way. (And don’t tell the CDC – I got a big thank you hug from Bear! Those are very rare in this COVID-centered age!!!)

I’m going to catch up on one of Mike’s past messages, which I missed posting. About Disrespect as a relationship destroyer. When you devalue or disrespect one of God’s creations, you are disrespecting God. We should respect: 1) Aging – seek their wisdom 2) Parents – honor them and benefit from their care & nurturing 3) Those in authority. Don’t blaspheme boss, teacher, government. You can disagree without being disrespectful. No one is either right or wrong all the time. 4) EVERYONE – show proper respect to everyone, because they are God’s creation. When we disrespect we put ourselves above others. We as a whole have very low regard for life. We will have to give an account; it isn’t going unnoticed. Always show respect: People will notice!

Mike from Hempfield

On this day in 1962 John Glenn was the first American to orbit the earth. Sidney Poitier was born in 1927 (First black actor to win an Oscar). Robert Peary died at age 63 in 1920 – he was the first explorer to reach the North Pole (other than Santa). And in 1974 Cher filed for separation from Sonny Bono. And Mike’s wife Shirley Hazelton is having a birthday today – wishing her many, many more happy years surrounded by her family and friends. Happy birthday Shirley!!

Still very cold, and a dusting of snow. Didn’t have to shovel and didn’t go out until after lunch. I was finally able to connect up with Autmn and get her to the new Driver’s Center in Jeannette to get her official PA issued Identification Card! NOW — she is official! And she did it all by herself, not needing anyone to verify any information or identity. She was so excited. I was too, and proud of her. And the new center is amazing! Greensburg’s location was crowded and outdated and inadequate. This place was clean and spacious and moved like a well oiled machine. And the people were super nice and very helpful. Big step for my little girl!

Autmn’s Official!
Very happy Autmn at the DMV!!!

Also finally rolled out the sugar cookies that I mixed up the other night. I decided to just freeze the ‘naked’ cookies. We will frost them as we defrost them (does that even make sense???), a few at a time. I don’t especially like the icing once it is frozen. They taste very good! Thanks to Gail and Colleen for sharing our Grama Crooks’ recipe.

Today I will share Paul’s message from River Hill – still in the series ‘A little child shall lead them.’ It was about the boy Samuel who was raised by Eli in the temple. We learn something every time we go to the house of God – and Samuel was where he needed to be to hear from God. So we need to: 1) be in a place to be able to hear God’s voice to us. Prayer is a conversation, but it’s not just our talking to God. We need to listen, too. 2) need to confirm that it’s really God. 3) we need to eliminate distractions and concentrate on God’s words. Also, A) God doesn’t stop talking because we aren’t listening. We need to be still, and listen. B) We confirm who he is through the word of God (Bible) C) God speaks to us in the quiet. Seek out a quiet place and then listen. D) respond with obedience. Hearing is not enough. We need to obey and serve.

On this day in 1807 Vice President Aaron Burr was arrested for treason but later acquitted, and in 1878 Thomas Edison was granted a patent for his phonograph. NO BABIES PLEASE! In 1914 Four-year old Charlotte May Pierstorff was mailed by train from Grangeville, Idaho to her grandparents’ house 73 miles away in the most famous ‘child in the post’ instance. In 1960 Bil Keane’s ‘Family Circus’ cartoon strip debuted, and in 1973 ‘Tie a Yellow Ribbon round the Ole Oak Tree’ by Tony Orlando and Dawn was released. Harper Lee (wrote To Kill a Mocking Bird) died at age 89 in 2016, and Bob Hope married Dolores DeFina in 1934. Lee Marvin was born in 1924, and I have two ‘celebrity’ birthdays today. One is my cousin Holly (one of the Skunk Hollow Girls); love you Holly! The other is a friend from Kathy’s church, Karen Hayes Ursta. Karen just got married on Sunday, so we wish Karen a happy birthday and wonderful years of happy marriage ahead. Happy birthday dear girls!

Once again my neighbor Al bailed me out – he walked across the street with his trusty snow blower and cleared off my driveway and my neighbor Karen’s driveway. I do so appreciate his help! The roads were clear as I drove over to Di’s and picked up things she had for me and my family. I got groceries at Aldi’s, then worked at the Greensburg store, then on to Jeannette. By the time I got home it was almost 3pm, so I grabbed a quick egg sandwich. I cleaned all the fresh veggies I bought and tomorrow I will roast them – according to Joanna Gaines’ recipe that was on her website a few years ago. They are so yummy! I spent about 45 minutes looking for a small rug for my entrance way to match the other rugs in my family room. I ordered it and I’ll see if it actually shows up!

Looking for a match

I will share Micah’s message from Old Mahoning – Love Does. If you love, you take ACTION. It’s a command, and love is the greatest motivator. Three points of love: 1) Love puts meaning into service – your speaking ability, spiritual gifts, and sacrificial actions. 2) Love puts maturity into your character – I Cor 13:8 Love never fails; never is in past tense; demands a response. Authenticates your discipleship; love will flow out of your life. 3) Love puts motivation into life – Better choice in your priorities. SHARE love, finish well. Depend on God and let him lead you. He will direct your paths, and you will hear ‘well done’! You will understand – let love mature and direct you.

Micah from Old Mahoning

One month from today is St. Patrick’s Day. And sometime in the night we are to start getting snow: 4 to 6 inches? That leaves tomorrow’s activities up in the air. Not going out on icy/snowy roads. I have all weekend to make up anything at work. Hopefully can still manage my weekend activities, because they should be fun!

Random snowstorm

At 11am I went to work and switched vehicles. It’s so different driving a big, empty van! Nate and Dave took the van and picked up my couch, which thankfully was is several pieces. They snapped together perfectly and the results are beautiful! A huge thanks to my moving duo! I took the van back and came home to finish cleaning. New couch, clean house – and then to Kath’s for a facetime visit with Mom, a yummy meal of taco salad and cookies, and our FAFF movie night. Tonight it was Sense and Sensibility.

I will share Greg’s message from Sunday: Love, Mercy, Inclusion. Basically, we have access to good moral teaching, but we don’t want it. Our culture has moral anorexia. We need to be a light, to shine brightly in the world’s darkness. You must model behavior that can be duplicated. What did Jesus value that can be caught? 1) For God so loved the world 2) that he gave his only son (mercy) 3) Whosoever believes in Him (inclusion). We should not be secluded in the church. Jesus offers his love and mercy to everyone – all are included! We need to seek and find those who are lost.
