March 4th!

My Aunt Hazel used to say that this was the most commanding day of the year: March forth!!!!

Treadmill this morning as it was cold and windy. I was glad to be inside. Work was busy – and I think things are picking up and we will be stepping up a pace or so in the next few weeks. After lunch I talked to my friend Joni – haven’t really talked to her since last spring. Might be able to get together with her and Mary soon!

Mary, Me, and Joni

Kath and I had a window visit with Mom – she looked neat and happy and smiled at us a few times, and waved when we left. So glad to see her other than on the little phone screen. Just makes us want to ‘break in’ and hug her! After the visit we had our FAFF – the movie was ‘What’s Up, Doc’ and we all laughed and laughed. So good for the soul! Kath had sandwiches and soup and apple pie. Very yummy – I was ready for it, and the soup warmed me up.

Kelly asked me to judge stories in their short story contest: the theme was ‘animals’. There were three horse stories and a zebra story. They were all different ages and the stories were all very creative. I enjoyed reading them – wish there were twice that many!

From age 11 to age 15 – great job!

Tonight I will share Paul’s message from River Hill, still the ‘little child shall lead them’ series. It was about Paul’s nephew saving his life. Paul was falsely accused, arrested, and in prison – but had a right to a trial. The nephew overheard a plot to have Paul killed on his way to trial, and he told the guards of the plot. They believed him and saved Paul’s life. 1) The nephew heard the message 2) Nephew spoke the message – we need to step out and tell the truth – it may save someone. 3) This action saved Paul’s life. How does that relate to us? God still is in control – we need to take courage and be committed to step out. Be of good cheer: You will speak Christ! As God’s people we can always take courage, as He says, ‘I will never leave or forsake you.’ This world in not our home – we must be willing to do and say the right thing, and tell the good news. Saving one man saved thousands. Think of Paul’s missionary journeys, and all the letters of the New Testament. He reached innumerable people – us included. So Speak the message!

Paul from River Hill

On this day in 1681 William Penn received a charter as sole proprietor of the colonial American Territory of Pennsylvania, and in 1791 Vermont was admitted as the 14th state (first one after the original 13 colonies!). In 1801 Thomas Jefferson was the first president to be inaugurated in Washington DC. In looking through the dates, there there 23 US Presidents inaugurated on this date, from John Adams in 1797 almost through FDR in 1933, including Abraham Lincoln in 1861 and again in 1865 (John Wilkes Booth attended his 2nd inauguration!). Luke Perry (actor) died at age 52 in 2019 and Lucille Ball filed for divorce from Desi Arnaz in 1960.

Beautiful day! Took a longer walk outside in the frosty sunshine. Kelly’s family came up about 11am, and we had Abie & Bimbo’s pizza for lunch. The boys still had schoolwork and a few zoom classes; Peyton and Matt washed their honkin’ big truck with their power washer!

I called Sprint (Apple) about a question on my iCloud storage, and 40 minutes later it was still unresolved. They are going to call me back… Next I have to call Comcast about getting a new promotional package. Always something.

Today I will share Micah’s message from Old Mahoning. They had a guest speaker who runs an orphanage in Uganda and I listed to his story first, then Micah’s message: God has a plan and a purpose. We know there are people who make a difference in the world by what they do. Faith is the foundation, and add prayer, obedience, hope, and compassion. We should reach out to everyone; God still cares, all the time. DON’T be like the others; Step out and be different. What does God want US to do?

Micah from Old Mahoning

In 1791 Congress established the US Mint (And no, it’s not M&M candy). In 1837 President Andrew Jackson and Congress recognized the Republic of Texan, and in 1845 Florida became the 27th state. Anne Sullivan began teaching 6 year old blind-deaf Helen Keller in 1887. In 1910, John D Rockefeller Jr announced his retirement from the Rockefeller Foundation to devote full time to being a philanthropist – and why is this important, you asked? I’m glad you did! John D Rockefeller Jr. funded the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg, from which stemmed the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, which keeps this wonderful history alive! Thank you, Mr. Rockefeller! The Star Spangled Banner officially became the US National Anthem in 1931, and Mt. Rushmore was dedicated in 1933. And in 1986 ‘Master of Puppets’ – 3rd album – was released by Metallica. Alexander Graham Bell was born in 1847 and Lou Costello died in 1959.

Busy, busy day! Lots going on at both stores, and it’s always busier when I miss a day at work and have to catch up. I stopped at Barbara Ann’s at the Mall – I have this addiction to coasters and was feeding my addiction. Then I stopped at Walmart for milk and Pepsi and chips for the boys tomorrow.

Chrissy came over after school, and she was in a chatty mood – my dad would have said she was vaccinated with a phonograph needle! I love when my grandkids open up and actually talk, and share things with me. I also love encouraging them to seek out who they are and want they want to do with their lives. With Chrissy – she wants to be and do everything! She loves life! She’s interested in everything from playing professional football to being an astronaut! And a photographer. And a marine biologist. And travel. And live in the mountains. Or maybe by the ocean. She loves it all! She makes me want to change my vocation. Wait. I’m retired…. Then Autmn stopped and brought Chrissy a Starbucks strawberry drink and a cake pop. She opened her new checking account and was very excited! So I got to see all my grandchildren within 24 hours!

Chrissy with her hair up, drinking her strawberry drink, wearing her new pants and sweatshirt!

Today I’ll share Rod’s message from Martin’s Ferry – Buying into the promises. The secret of remaining faithful was Elijah bought into the promises of God – trusted and believed him. 1) God keeps his promises; buy into God’s plan for you. 2) There are thousands of promises, but not every promise is for everyone. Ask yourself if it’s personal or universal, and is it conditional or unconditional. 3) Claim the promise! Elijah A) separated himself B) humbled himself C) Be SPECIFIC in your prayers and requests D) Be persistent and focused E) Be expectant – know God will answer. How do YOU live YOUR Life? Expect the impossible, and remain faithful.

On this day in 1778 Nathanael Greene was appointed Quartermaster of the Continental Army under George Washington. (GREENSBURG was named for Nathanael Greene…) In 1903 Martha Washington Hotel, catering to women only, opened in NYC, and in 1933 KING KONG premiered at Radio City Music Hall in NYC. The Sound of Music was released in 1965, one of the most popular musical films of all times, staring Christopher Plummer and Julie Andrews. In 1974 the Grand Jury concluded President Richard Nixon was involved in Watergate cover up, and in 1977 Bette Davis was the first woman to receive the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award; In 2016 US Astronaut Scott Kelly returned to earth after 340 days in space, setting an ISS record. John Wesley, founder of Methodism, died at age 87 in 1791. Sam Houston was born in 1793, Dr. Seuss in 1904, Desi Arnaz in 1917, and Ben Roethlisberger in 1982. March 1, 2021`

I guess we can say March came in like a lamb – milder temps and some sun (very little) but did get a coating of snow after dark! I drove down to Kelly’s this morning to stay with the boys while she had a follow up doctor’s appointment. Chase asked for help with math (he’s 11), and I could have probably translated the Bible from original manuscripts before I understood the math problems! We had better luck with his grammar. Logan needed a little direction with his grammar too – thankfully that was more up my alley. Peyton did his math online, then Ruth Ann took him to his basketball practice. I made Chase two egg sandwiches (he gave me particular instructions right down to how to sprinkle the pepper!) and Logan had 2 grilled cheese and an egg salad sandwich. I left there about 6:30pm and saw a number of deer in the meadow right after I crossed the covered bridge. Got home to about half an inch of snow in New Stanton, and a little less here. It was a fun day and the boys and I shared many laughs together!

I will share Steve’s message from Maplewood: The Elephant in the Room. As they all headed to Jerusalem, Jesus explained to his disciples what was going to happen: He would be arrested, beaten, and would die. Peter strongly objected – he didn’t want to hear about or consider Jesus’ death – they all wanted to ignore the elephant in the room. They loved their time traveling and sharing with Jesus – but they did not want to hear these hard things so they ignored them. We do the same thing, avoiding what we don’t want to deal with. But Jesus doesn’t avoid it – he addresses it plainly and openly, even asking who people said he was – Peter finally replied He was the Messiah, but also disputed the thoughts of His death. Jesus told Peter: Get behind me, Satan! Jesus knew what he needed to do, even if the disciples kept avoiding it. Lent is a reflection on Jesus’ death — and we must follow Jesus and what he has asked us to do. Are you willing? What really matters? Think on THOSE things!

Steve from Maplewood – if you want to hear the life-altering account of his near-death COVID experience tune in to www.maplewoodpc.org and listen to the 2-28-21 message

On this day in 1692 Sarah Goode, Sarah Osborne, and Tituba were arrested for witchcraft in Salem MA. In 1781 the continental congress officially adopted the articles of confederation – the first constitution of the United States of America. President John Tyler signed a resolution to annex the republic of Texas in 1845, and the 20 month old son of Charles and Anne Lindberg was kidnapped from his home in New Jersey. In 1961 President JFK established the Peace Corps, and in 1978 Charlie Chaplin’s coffin and remains were stolen from a Swiss cemetery. Chopin (pianist and composer) was born in 1810; Glenn Miller in 1904, David Niven in 1910, Dinah Shore in 1917, Pete Rozelle in 1926, and Justin Beiber in 1994 (Man, he’s just a BOY!!!). Jackie Coogan (Uncle Fester in the Addams Family) died at age 69 in 1984, and June Carter married Johnny Cash in 1968.

Rain, rain, rain. I though I’d need an ark! But— don’t have to shovel rain! I dropped off a loaf of bread to Kath, then ran into Dollar Tree for a quick minute. Came home and paid the first of March’s bills online, then put up a few things for St. Patrick’s day. Had a grilled cheese on homemade bread for lunch. Perfect!

Today I will share a new message – Kittanning First Baptist (A friend of Diane’s attends there, and they have a strong youth group). Today was youth Sunday and they were in charge of the whole service. The message was given by Melissa Duvall about comfort and peace. Jesus spoke words of comfort to his disciples, even though he also needed comfort. There is more to life than this world. We have an inheritance – faith is greater worth than gold. We are promised no more pain, death, tears – we’re promised peace and rest. God is creating a new heaven and a new earth; look forward to it. Our faith can encourage ourselves but others, as well. We live by faith, not by sight. Our struggles are not against this world, but against powers of darkness. Worrying solves nothing. ‘Do not fear; I will help! Take my hand in faith.’ The peace of God will guard our hearts.

On this day in 1784 John Wesley chartered the Methodist Church, and in 1787 the charter establishing what is now the University of Pittsburgh was granted. In 1854 the republican party was formally organized, and in 1983 the final episode of MASH aired with 125 million US viewers; in 1984 the 26th Grammy Awards saw Michael Jackson win 8! Mario Andretti was born in 1940, and in 1797 Mr. Ed (the talking horse) died – that was Bud’s favorite show, and he’d tell me stories about watching it and would laugh and laugh! Paul Harvey (The REST of the story) died at age 90 in 2009.

Missed my window of walking outside opportunity – it was raining when I was ready to walk. But as soon as I finished on the treadmill it quit! Did normal chores, then finished the cinnamon rolls that the Hancher guys requested, and mixed up the dough for the homemade bread. THAT will be supper and I can’t wait.

Rod’s message from Martin’s Ferry is a continuation of Elijah – at Mt. Carmel; FIRE FROM HEAVEN. If God’s gonna put you in an important place, he’s going to make sure your heart is ready. God sends Elijah (his heart is ready!) to King Ahab; Ahab calls him a snake! To which Elijah basically says, ‘It’s not my fault – it’s yours!’ So there is a showdown: the prophets of Baal and the one prophet of God. Who will you worship? God’s people just don’t say anything; they remained neutral; all it takes to lose it all is for God’s people to be silent. Both prepared their alters and the prophets of Baal called on him all day but no response. Elijah turned to God: “YOU are God! Make yourself known, and why you sent me!” No frenzy, no panic – but the fire came. The people turned their hearts back to God. Elijah had all the prophets of Baal slaughtered. Truths: 1) Divided allegiance is as wrong as idolatry. 2) Most effective tool is a prayer of faith. 3) Never underestimate the power of being truly dedicated to God

On this day in 2018 Barbara Streisand revealed that she had cloned her dog twice. In 2020 the Dow Jones index suffered its biggest points fall in history amid concern of COVID. Louis Vuitton died at age 70 in 1892, Fred Rogers (and with him, Daniel Tiger, Henrietta Pussycat, Lady Elaine Fairchild, X the Owl, King Friday the 13th, Sarah Saturday, Prince Tuesday — on and on!) died in 2003 at age 74, and Leonard Nimoy at age 83 in 2015. John Steinbeck (Grapes of Wrath) was born in 1902, Joanne Woodward (actress) in 1930, and Elizabeth Taylor in 1932. And my friends Trent and Michelle’s youngest son, Alexander, turned three today! Sunny day quickly turned cloudy – never got warm so I pretty much stayed inside. Did some writing, emails, laundry, and ironing. Chrissy came over for a few hours and did her online classes. I mixed up cinnamon roll dough as it’s a request for the boys on Wednesday. Also made potato soup.

Ran over to the store to get supplies to make small curtains for the basement window. The sun shines in and reflects off the TV and it’s hard to see. That will probably be a Sunday project after I listen to a few of my ‘guys’.

I will share Greg’s message from Vanderbilt today. BELLOWS – we need to fan our faith into flames; take what we have and feed it. Run your race – we all run, but run to win. Make the effort. Don’t run aimlessly; seek the crown that doesn’t fade. Churches are full of unbelieving people – we need to be a strong witness and a good servant. 1) Be discriminating; we have endless options so choose carefully a) meditate day and night b) pray c) give d) fast e) fellowship – encourage, and be fed. Love one another. 2) Be deliberate – calculate what’s good and bad 3) Be determined in what you do. a) transformation; build Christlike character/honesty b) in your relationship with Jesus. Keep moving, keep praying (especially for your kids) , keep looking for the lost, keep growing, keep running the race. Fan your faith!

On this day in 1773 Westmoreland County was formed from Bedford County; Hanna’s Town was named as the first county seat. In 1929 President Calvin Coolidge established the Grand Teton National Park, and in 1933 Golden Gate Bridge groundbreaking ceremony took place. In 1935 the Yankees released Babe Ruth and he signs with the Boston Braves. Michael Jackson’s THRILLER album became #1 and stayed there for 37 weeks. Levi Strauss (first company to manufacture blue jeans) was born in 1829, and Herbert Henry Dow (Dow Chemical) in 1866. Fats Domino was born in 1928 and Johnny Cash in 1932. And two of my friends are having birthdays today: Sue Nease (a long time friend from Hempfield Church who is living in Florida) and Eric Yowonske – my cousin Deb’s son-in-law. Ten months from today is Christmas Day – miss you, Bud! Although it’s still cold today, it’s sunny and bright. Warms the spirit! I had a tangle of tasks at both stores this morning, but I find that I like doing things that make me stop and think and reason things through. And mostly I like solving problems. Nate & Dave stopped on the way home from work and took the purple couch down to the shed. So now the Buick is tucked back in the garage.

Tonight was FAFF night at my place. We had our facetime visit with mom, and when Paul said hello she really perked up! She has always thought the world of Paul and he could always cheer her up and make her smile. We watched the first half of the movie, then stopped for dinner: Stouffer’s single-serving lasagna, garlic twists (bread sticks) and salad – with cookies for dessert. Then we watched the rest of the movie. We each got interrupted several times with phone calls but moved right on through and had a great evening. Again, it’s fun to be able to share experiences and actually TALK to people!

Today I will share Micah’s message from Old Mahoning: Just do it! We need to work to serve and please God, not men. We must press on, be diligent, and finish the race. 1) Categories – in relationships – we must practice submission, love, obedience, and work hard. 2) Commandments – Whatever you do, do with your whole heart. Worship is our every day life, not just church. Certainly we will receive rewards for serving God, and reap the blessings, as he is a good master. We will be repaid for wrong, as well. We all have the same standard (Bible) although all do not embrace it. Vengeance and Justice belong to the Lord. Remember that you can’t follow God accidentally – it’s an act of will. So take action – and just DO it!

Micah from Old Mahoning

On this day in 1793 the first US cabinet meeting was held at George Washington’s home. In 1836 Samuel Colt patented the first multi-shot revolving-cylinder revolver, enabling the firearm to be fired multiple times without reloading. In 1862 First Legal Tender Act 1862 is passed by the US Congress, authorizing the United States Note (greenback) into circulation, the first fiat paper money that was legal tender in America. In 1901 US Steel corporation was organized by J P Morgan. Pierre Renoir (Painter and Sculptor), was born in 1841, and George Harrison (Beatles) in 1943. Christopher Wren (architect of St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Wren Building – College of William and Mary in Williamsburg VA) died in 1723 at age 90, and Tennessee Williams (playwright) died at age 71 in 1983. And just got word that Bob Kudzma, former KDKA-TV weatherman, passed away today at age 81. One of the joys of his life (other than the weather) was driving school bus! He was chief meteorologist for 34 years with KDKA.

It was truly a beautiful day! I did the treadmill early, then cleaned my house, which is the standard Wednesday chore. When I finished, I made a fruit salad and watched the end of a great old comedy that I had started last night – Support your Local Sheriff. James Garner is funny and talented and it’s so fun!

James Garner (left) – Support your Local Sheriff!

After my late lunch it was still 62* so I took a long walk around the neighborhood, and stopped to talk to a few neighbors. Amazing that we can finally see the ground! And the little local creeks and streams are full and rushing. I even saw a big red bottle floating down by St. John’s Church Road. If I could have gotten to it I would have checked to see if it had a message! It may have traveled for miles in the melting snow!

Finally a nice day to get outside
Look! Yard! Green! Grass!!!
Way more water than normal….

I just read the report of the armed shooter at Latrobe School. It’s being reported as a prank. I hope they find the one who did that, and that he learns the error of his ways. What a horrid thing to have to go through: teachers, students, SWAT team, police. Can’t imagine what the parents were feeling! Sigh.

I’m sharing Mike’s message from Hempfield – KINDNESS. One of my passions! Kindness is a fruit of the spirit. He started with the story of Ruth/Naomi/Boaz. It was a choice for Ruth to stay with Naomi, and for Boaz to choose to be Ruth’s kinsman redeemer. And look how that turned out. King David came from that lineage. Then the story of Mephibosheth – Jonathan’s son. David searched for him and restored his rightful place as the grandson of King Saul. He didn’t have to do that. Then the Good Samaritan. Who acted as a neighbor? The Levite? The Priest? Both were affiliated with the ‘church’. It was the Samaritan, a natural enemy of the Jews, who went above and beyond to care for a stranger who was left for dead. Being religious is different than being Christ-like. Jesus was kind even when people/we don’t deserve it. We aren’t worthy but Jesus gave his life for us. We need to be kind and compassionate to even those who don’t deserve it. Jesus did – go and do likewise.

Mike from Hempfield

On this day in 1208 St. Francis of Assisi (age 26) received his vocation, and in 1868 the House of Representatives voted 126 to 47 to impeach President Andrew Johnson. In 1981 Prince Charles announced his engagement to Lady Diana Spencer, and Elton John was knighted by Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace in 1998. Robert Fulton (invented the steamboat) died at age 49 in 1815, and Dinah Shore at age 76 in 1994. Wilhelm Grimm (Grimm’s Fairy Tales) was born in 1786 – I watched ‘Ever After’ last night. So fun! The red-turned-yellow house below me that was being renovated was finally put on the market. I checked it out online and there is already a ‘sale pending’ notice. It will be interesting to see who the new neighbors will be.

Just got word that Westmoreland Manor will open certain units for window visits – Mom’s unit is on the list! So thanks to Kath we have a visit scheduled for next week. It will be so much easier than the facetime visits for Mom.

Our little momma.

Today I will share Steve’s message from Maplewood. He will be sharing traditional Lent messages, and this one was Baptism & Temptation. We have to learn to say NO, and deny ourselves. Forty is a core number in scripture: 40 years in a generation, 40 days of rain (Noah), 40 days that Moses was on the mountain, 40 days that Jesus was in the dessert after his baptism, 40 years roaming the dessert waiting to enter the promised land. We need to recognize that our journey is not in our hands – it is spirit-led: 1) LAW – we have no control, and we have to learn how to give up being in control, and to receive what he wants to give us. 2) RENOUNCE – we have to learn how to renounce. We see religion as adding something to our existing life, when actually is should BE a way of life. Jesus renounced some things that were good (food, heaven, etc). Jesus was an ordinary man, and he emptied himself to be like us, but without sin. Life is more than bread – make space for God.

Steve from Maplewood

On this day in 1455 Johannes Gutenberg printed the first Bible (estimated date). In 1927 President Calvin Coolidge created the Federal Radio Commission, and in 1945 US Marines raised an American flag on top of the mountain in Iwo Jima. The first mass inoculation against polio with Jonas Salk vaccine was distributed at an elementary school in Pittsburgh in 1954, and in 1997 NBC shows Schindler’s List completely uncensored (65M viewers). George Frideric Handel (MESSIAH) was born in 1685, Victor Fleming (director for Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind) was born in 1889, and Michael Dell (Dell Computer Technologies) was born in 1965. John Keats (poet) died from TB at age 25 in 1821, Stan Laurel (of Laurel and Hardy) died at age 74 in 1965, and James Herriot (All Creatures Great and Small) died in 1995.
