Today, at about 3:30pm, the heavens gained another angel. She has been in training all her life, and those who knew and loved our Mom felt like she was their personal angel, anyway!

I can just imagine her stepping into the arms of Jesus, getting hugs and welcomed by family and saints. Probably one of the first things she did was to check with the head gardener, to see if she could be any help with the flowers. And just possibly she might give them some quiet advice about how to take care of them, and where to plant what. She had a way of getting things done without anyone actually realizing she was running the show.

I’m wondering if she has to keep our dad and John apart, or if they are all just one big family! Dad would be a handful, for sure! He probably ordered pizza for the whole bunch of them. Mom was soft and sweet and smart and kind, and touched the lives of so many. Right now I am thinking of the song, ‘Thank you for giving to the Lord; I was a life that was changed….’ She for sure had a heart for the Lord and shared His love in her everyday life.

Mom and Dad – back then….

Kath and I were scheduled to visit Mom at about 4pm, but just as I was getting ready to leave the house, Kath called me with the news. They let us go into her room and see her before the funeral director came in. The hospice chaplain was waiting, and had prayer with us. He had visited her often and we were comforted by the fact that he had shared scriptures and hymns with her. She looked peaceful, and it really seemed like she was looking right at me.

Tomorrow we will go to the funeral home and make the arrangements for the viewing, the service and final resting. Not sure yet so will share when we have details. In the meantime, thank you for your love and support – we could not get through this parting without all of you! We love you!

Mom and John

We rejoice with Mom, settling into her mansion, meeting old friends and making new ones; hearing the heavenly chorus and walking with God in the garden. We will miss her, every day, all the time, but we can’t be sad that she is where she always wanted to be. Rejoice with us, and with her, as we celebrate her life. We’ll miss you, Mom – we already do!

Happy Mother’s Day, Mom!

Page from Mom’s memory book: Share a memory of going to church as you were growing up: “I remember when I was very small we went as a family. They closed the church and after that I went with the neighbors to their church. When the second world war started and gas was rationed, Aunt Hazel and I walked to our church, about 2 mile from us.” God bless my faithful mother!!!

Thanks for sharing, Mom!

Yes, Sharon, she was a very special lady. She touched the lives of all who knew her. The had that spirit about her – people would stop her in the grocery story and ask if she needed help! She was always sharing her faith. We’ll miss her, for sure.

Marge, Kathy, and families, it has been one of life’s good gifts to have known your Mom and Dad. Although Dorothy’s stature was small, her character and faith were quite large. She taught by example that God is love.

    • Marge Burke says:

Mom was very good a being kind, quiet, loving, and sharing – but she also knew how to get things done! And she loved including our friends in her family! We were indeed blessed! Love you!

Marge, your mom was the sweetest person. On are visits to her home, I have memories of going to Grandma’s home on the farm. It was so relaxed and peaceful. I loved her home and flower garden.

What a wonderful woman. She always welcomed me into her house with a big hug, and made me feel at home. I can picture her now, walking along with John on one side and with Cliff on the other, letting them know where she’s going to plant her flowers.

Marge, it was one of life’s good gifts to have known both your Mom and Dad. Dorothy smiled with her mouth and her eyes and she had that mischievous twinkle in those eyes. She always made me feel a part of the Steiner family. She reflected her faith in the love extended to so many. She was authentic, genuine, and loved by many. Peace, dear Dorothy.

    • Marge Burke says:

We have been blessed since they day we ‘adopted’ you into our family – and so glad we have shared these years together. Thank you for your unending friendship, your spoort, love and prayers – and especially your beautiful words about Mom. Love you —

  8. Nancy Clark says:

Marge, I never met your sainted mom, but I feel like I know her – through you, your writing about her and your love for her. When I meet her in the main flower garden at the Pearly Gate, I’ll thank her for bringing you into this world…and then leading you into the lives and hearts of so many.

    • Marge Burke says:

Those are sweet thoughts, Nancy. Thanks for your comments and for sharing them with me. She, like her mother, loved her gardens and sewing, and they both meant so much to her. I dabble in both but excel in neither! She was a saintly woman – and has touched countless lives. Thank you again…
