First – today’s lists! I was reading in bed when Gen called me – I sometimes do that on Saturday mornings, if I don’t have time restraints. We talked for about 45 minutes and it was a very nice visit. She is ‘dressing up’ for Halloween – wearing waders and Zane’s hat and a fishing pole. I, on the other hand, am turning off all the lights and hiding out in the basement! It gets crazy in Ft. Allen and I actually think they bus kids in from other neighborhoods! I’m sure they’ll get plenty of candy, despite my boycott. I got Cameron his request (chocolate milk!) and am ready if they stop over later.

My cousin Mark came over and put pellets under my deck and shed – it’s supposed to repel skunks, groundhogs, etc. Then Nate stopped and finished patching the driveway pothole. I did laundry, clipped my nails, paid bills, swept the downstairs, answered emails, and changed a few calendars (I know, I know — bad luck to change them early!) But that’s my excitement so here is Day 4 – the last day and the trip home.

Day 4 – We checked out of the motel early, then (of course) drove through part of the battlefield. Our plan was to attend church at the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church. The service was very nice – we knew most of the songs and the praise band was very good. The message was about King David, the prophet Nathan, and Bathsheba. After the service we were able to walk around the church to see the history – which contained quite a bit. A few of the parishioners showed us around and pointed out some details, which was very kind of them. We didn’t take a lot of photos inside the church. The very first US Flag with 50 stars (when Hawaii was added) was given to Eisenhower, and he gifted that flag to the church when we left the presidency. There were items in a glass display case on the second floor reflecting both President Lincoln and President Eisenhower and their connection with the church.

When Lincoln came into Gettysburg to give the Gettysburg Address in November of 1863, he connected with resident John Burns, who at age 68 picked up a rifle on the first day of the battle and joined whatever battalion that was close. He was wounded three times, and once left abandoned on the battle field when the Union line collapsed, but he dragged himself home and recovered. Lincoln hear about him and they went to church together. According to records, Burns fell asleep through the whole service, but Lincoln didn’t. Lincoln has a designated pew in the church, as does the Eisenhower family. We enjoyed both the church service and the little history lessons – and the hospitality of the church members.

There wasn’t anything else that we wanted to see, so we drove past the Gettysburg Museum of History one more time, then headed out Route 30. We didn’t get very far when we saw the marker for ‘FIRST SHOT FIRED.’ We made a U-turn in a church parking lot and went back. It was very interesting to have our last official Gettysburg monument be the first thing that happened!

Date and time
Kelly had found a Facebook post about the Round Barn farmer’s market, which was only a mile off Route 30. We stopped there for a short visit and that was interesting and fun. They had so many fun items. There was a pleasant area of chairs in the shade to sit and visit, and of course pumpkins, apples, gourds, and squash (plus tons of other things). There were crafts and gift items – the one that was interesting to me were the bags – made from feed sacks and lined with material with attached handles. I know Kathy would love those – as she’s a ‘bag lady’! (In an entirely good concept…) The pet display featured Snoopy and his dog house. The goat was very laid back (literally and figuratively). Kelly got her bonding moment – I think she is missing her puppy Ransom! It was a very interesting and historic stop.

This time when we got back on the road, we just focused on home. We stopped for gas to fill up for the trip, then grabbed lunch at Subway down the road about an hour. We got home mid-afternoon and got Kelly loaded up to get home – I know she was tired and still had an hour’s drive. I got the car emptied out, the buckets stacked that were blocking the driveway, and the car tucked into the garage. So another successful, fun, and history-filled trip on the books!

Home!
