January 20, 2022

Today was catch-up day, getting the things done that I had planned for earlier in the week. Bank, food, both Pinnacles, Mike P, Post Office, Gabes. I didn’t get home until after 2pm, but everything is back on track. After I ate, I cleaned the strawberries and then boiled potatoes and eggs. I decided that I need to pick a plan and stick to it, and eat better and be more organized. We’ll see how I do!

Start of a fruit salad
I’ll get creative with these…

I also want to write to Colonial Williamsburg and see if I can get an additional ornament from this year. I have my Williamsburg Christmas tree with all my collectable Williamsburg ornaments – but I really like this one on the wall by my lanterns. Possibly I could get a second one. They’re pretty good about that, especially if I request it when I am sending in my donation!

My high school friend Diane sent me this picture that our classmate Kendra (with whom Diane still keeps in close touch) took at the Gateway National Park in New Jersey. Amazing! Thanks to both girls for sharing.

America!

I don’t have a specific plan for tomorrow. I’ll see what appeals to me when I get up, after the treadmill. Tomorrow is a brand new day, with no mistakes in it! (Quote from Anne Shirley – Anne of Green Gables.)

January 20 – Did any relatives ever live with you? “My dad’s mother, Grandma Crooks, lived with us and so did my dad’s brother, Uncle Edd Crooks. They were a big part of our family. We loved them very much.” We found evidence of that when we were going through Mom’s trunk. Uncle Edd carved a lot of special gifts for Mom!

Calendar inspiration for today – Even Nature takes a break to focus on serenity.  Slow down!

Yesterday’s vacation destination was actually in our ‘own back yard’ – Historic Hanna’s Town, which I have posted LOTS about! The posted photo was the LeFevre House, directly across the street from the Education Center and the Tavern. The house was donated to the historic society, taken apart, and rebuilt one log at a time. Events at Hanna’s town are:  Spring and fall teas at the Steele house, exhibits in the education center (currently Penn’s Woods), Research library, gift shop, Independence Day celebration, Proctor’s Militia encampments, Court Days, Civil War Weekend (every other year), Fall Family Day, Three Centuries of Christmas, Holiday Family Day, and many special seminars and workshops.  It’s right in your OWN BACK YARD – so check it out!  www.westmorelandhistory.org. As you can see, I get pretty passionate about the site!

Today was a warmer day with a bit of sunshine in the afternoon. Even though I was inside, the sun coming through the windows seemed to brighten up the day. I took my time getting the cleaning done, listening to CD’s for a while, then turning on the tv downstairs for background noise. I listened to an old Christmas TV special with Kacey Musgrave. It was a little off in left field, but she has a really unique and impressive singing voice.

Kacey & one of her guests

Scrubbed the basement floor again – never ending! – but I have a person coming on Monday to give me another diagnosis. Still waiting on info from the first guy. Two of the people I contacted promised to set something up – before Christmas. Still waiting. We’ll see what happens on Monday.

The dark spots are water under the chair mat

I also turned a movie on, which I think I saw many years ago, but it was also unique. Crazy for Christmas. It was fun to see something different.

Other than taking the trash up and getting the mail I didn’t go outside except to shake the rugs. So now I’m going to finish this then make a salad.

January 19th – Tell about a favorite Uncle. “My favorite uncle (besides Uncle Edd) was Uncle Charlie Crooks on my dad’s side & Uncle Fred on my mother’s side. They taught me many things. Uncle Charlie told us stories & took us places. Uncle Fred was just fun & he took us places also. I was Uncle Fred & Aunt Betty’s maid of honor at their wedding.”

Calendar inspiration: Many of your happiest childhood memories were in your own backyard.  You still don’t have to go far to have fun.

Our childhood was playing outside, with neighbors and cousins – all four seasons!

Yesterday’s vacation destination was Chicago. Kath guessed correctly. The photo posted was the skyline, the Willis Tower. Things to do in Chicago might be (but not limited to!) River & Sunset Cruises, Gangster & Ghost tours, River Architecture Helicopter skyline tour, underground donut tour, Lincoln Park indoor skydiving and Lincoln Park zoo, trickery magic show, biking, Frank Lloyd Wright Robie House, Medieval torture museum, scavenger hunt, tall ships cruise, fireworks.

Lather rinse repeat! I bundled up this morning and cleaned off the new snow in the driveway (that didn’t take long) and also finished the parking space at the top. A little sun during the day helped make it clear and dry. ‘A thing of beauty is a joy forever’ — or until it snows again!

All clear!

I invented a little shortcut for spreading salt – I put the very heavy bag of salt in my garden bucket. It has wheels and I can pull it up the driveway as I need it. Sure beats making a bunch of trips or lugging a heavy bag.

It has wheels!

Also, I just discovered a Hallmark ‘Paul Campbell’ movie that I’ve never seen. I will try to watch it later, because he is my favorite!

Sun, Sand & Romance
Paul Campbell!

After lunch I checked in with Nate, who – with Chrissy’s help – was shoveling the driveway at the new house while the furnace guy was working on the new space in the basement. Moving right along! Then I popped over to the store to pick up about 6 items, since I didn’t have to work today and couldn’t stop ‘on my way home.’ The Pinnacle guys were still working on clearing the lots, and they were ‘dicey’, as they put it! So I scrubbed the basement floor, did the ironing, and navigated a new program on my computer. I’m not good at that!

January 18, 2022 – Tell about a favorite Aunt – (Aunt Effie Burns and Aunt Blanch Hillberry). “Aunt Effie Burns was my favorite aunt on my dad’s side. Aunt Blanch was my favorite aunt on my mother’s side. I would stay at Aunt Effie’s and she taught me how to do things the ‘fancy’ way. Mom & Dad often called me ‘little Effie.’ Aunt Blanch was just a lot of fun & was generous with anything she had. I got nice things when a child because of her kindness.” I don’t remember Aunt Blanch but I do remember Aunt Effie a bit. She was eccentric, if I recall!

Calendar inspiration for today is: Plan ahead and be prepared for things to glide smoothly.

Yesterday’s vacation destination was Austria – and the photo posted was Vienna. Some things to do in Austria are: Winter sports, Bohemian forest, Christmas markets, concerts at Anne’s Church, Ice Caves & Waterfalls. Today was all about snow! It took me all day to clean off my decks, sidewalks, and the driveway. There is a little section up front – about half of the spare parking space – that I didn’t finish. The snow plow throws the frozen ice/snow mix onto the driveway and it’s very hard to clear off. I’ll save that for tomorrow or Wednesday, providing we don’t get dumped on again.

side and top partly done
Snow piles

I spent almost two hours outside before lunch and was able to clear the hill, from the bottom corner of the house up to the double space at the top. I went inside and warmed up and worked on a pot of vegetable soup, which I let simmer all afternoon.

Bottom partly done

I went back outside and finished the upper driveway and the bottom double section and spread salt. Had to do the back walkway a second time. Glad that it’s done, for now. We’ll see what tomorrow brings. I already had a quote picked out for today, but I’ll include another one here: I’ve been ‘mostly dead’ all day. I’m sure almost everyone knows that is from The Princess Bride!

I’m glad it said Winter Welcome and not Welcome, Winter!

Come on in! Soup’s on.

There were 3 neighbor guys outside cleaning their driveways. Thought maybe one would pop over and help. Nope! But that’s OK – I’m like the Little Red Hen – I’ll do it myself!!!

January 17th – Tell a fond memory of your Grandma. “My Grandma Eakman had a gold satin dress made for her by my mother to wear for her & Grandpap’s 50th anniversary. She wore it to my wedding when I married your father. Grandma Crooks was always ready to listen to my problems & help me to know what to do about them. When she was getting old & unsteady on her feet we loved to help her walk places around the house & yard.”

Calendar inspiration for today is to have fun; join a conversation, share an activity.  Find fun every day!

Today was definitely a ‘have fun in the snow’ day!

Yesterday’s vacation destination was the Grand Canyon, and the photo posted was the Grand Circle. Other exciting things about the Grand Canyon are Helicopter tours,  Sunset views, off road safari, Sedona, Railway adventure package.

January 16, 2022

Well, here it comes! It started drifting down flurries a little after 3pm. It’s so very cold – I mind that more than the snow. Not looking forward to shoveling out over the next two days.

It’s snowing…
Snowing on the lights…

Mary & I didn’t expect to have any students in Sunday school this morning, but we did! A lovely little five-year-old named Grace, who is very smart, a soft-spoken chatter box, and loves to do crafts. We enjoyed having her and hoping she comes back every week. Her family comes to Church but usually not Sunday School. Maybe since the service times have changed they will all come for Sunday school. After church Mary & I had breakfast at Eat-n-Park. I liked the tee-shirts the servers wore. We should all adopt that for ourselves.

Since I didn’t have to make lunch, I came home and changed and went outside to sweep out the car and wipe the dash and the mats. It was SO COLD! I was going to clean the windows but lost my nerve. So after I got the car back inside I decided to bake chocolate chip cookies. I did them a little different and they did turn out well. In the freezer they go!

Yum!

If you have to go out, please be safe. Stay in if you can. Be smart and cautious!

January 16th – Tell a fond memory of your Grandpa. (Grandpap Eakman) “I only knew one Grandpa. We all (cousins) called him Grandpap. He was a farmer & had ‘big’ work horses. Once in a while he would put us up on the horse’s back & lead the horse around the barn yard. It felt like I was on top of the world. Uncle Jim looks just like our Grandpap. Tells stories like Grandpap did.”

Yesterday’s vacation destination was Muskoka Lake in Gravenhurst, Ontario Canada. This was were the Smails’ two summer cottages were located. They went up starting in May or June, and closed up in September or October. Although I saw plenty of pictures, and heard lots of stories (Bud was REALLY GOOD at telling stories, most of them funny!), I was never there. Things to see or do at Muskoka Lake are Gravenhurst Harbor, Lake Joseph, Water Skiing, boating, parties on the docks, Summer games, waterfalls, hiking, islands, Sunsets, fall foliage.  And Bud would say, the bars!

January 15, 2022

Before 10am, I had done a mile on the treadmill, changed my bed sheets, washed them, dried them, folded and put them away, got a shower, and had breakfast. I was just reading emails when Kath called and said we could finally get together today and go through the things in Grandad Crooks’ trunk. So after lunch we spent several hours doing that, and it was fun. Both being together and taking a ‘walk back’ in time. There were quite a number of things from the mid- to late 1800’s, things belonging to Mom, her mom, and her grandmother – and her uncle Edd. We only have a small pile left to go through, then we can start on the photos.

Spelling book, Deed, ledger (1850’s) Penman’s Chart – Cool stuff!

After she left, I decided to go to the store, which was a crazy mistake. It wasn’t as crowded as I expected but I thought maybe we were facing the apocalypse and I didn’t get the memo. I couldn’t believe how many shelves were empty – and the strangest things! No lettuce at all! And yogurt. And chicken. I actually didn’t go for food items. But the 2 things I was looking for were sold out, too. Razor blade glass scraper? Really???

Marketside Classic Iceberg Salad, 12 oz

If you are on facebook, you will see that I have a double bed I’d like to get rid of. If you or anyone you know is interested please email or txt me – or leave a note on this website. Thanks!

Will we or will we not get snow tomorrow night? When I went past Pinnacle, I noticed they had the snowplow truck parked out front beside the doors, and that all the cars were lined up close together in the back line. So they are ready to plow, should the need arise! Stay safe and cautious if we do it get – or whenever we get it!

January 15th – Name the childhood addresses you remember. “Only had one address & that was Smicksburg, PA.” Kath and I found a few cards and a newspaper mailed to Jess Crooks at Smicksburg PA. Not sure when the mailing address changed to a HOME, R.D.#.

Calendar inspiration – History lies quietly in every home & family.  Reflect on your personal experiences – write your stories down!

Yesterday’s vacation destination was — Plimoth Plantation in Plymouth MA – Most of the photos below are from the trip Kath and I took to Boston in 2019. At the plantation is the Grist Mill, 17th Century English Village, thatched houses, family gardens, the Wampanoag community (Historic Patuxet), museums, demonstrations, meeting house. Other things to do around Plymouth are the Sandwich Glass Museum, John & Priscilla Alden site, Memorial State Park, Hoxie House, Brewster Gardens, Antiquarian House, Mayflower Museum and the Mayflower II (when it’s in dock), cruises. We didn’t see everything – maybe that means a trip back someday?

It’s been overcast all day, and cold, but not unbearable. I’m glad that the predicted snow will not come until Sunday night. That gives me another whole day of not shoveling the driveway! But there were flurries earlier.

When I woke up this morning I realized that my first morning glance usually fell on the fan pulls above me. What more fitting sight than a stained glass angel and a glow in the dark cross?

The cross is from my childhood!

After a few small chores, including laundry, I decided to make a card for Max, one of my little guys in Sunday School. His mom messaged me that he was sick and they wouldn’t be at church Sunday. Even though I’m far from crafty I constructed a little personal card (inspired by the Christmas Card I got from Skunk Hollow cousin Karen Valyo). I hope he likes it, just because it’s personal. Get well quick, Max!!!

After that I decided to tackle the shed. Nate was asking if he could pick up the space heaters, and I knew they were behind the mower and the deer. So I took a bunch of stuff out, put my stuff in the back along the wall, shoved the reindeer in next, then the mower. There were 2 things that were too heavy for me, but the rest of his ‘stuff’ I lugged up the path and loaded in my car. Figured I might as well take them over since I had them unearthed. When I got down to the house, Nate & Dave were working on the ramp so Piggy could get in and out of the yard by himself. I figured a ramp was a good idea, because as we ‘age’ it will be a benefit for more than just Piggy!

Back door ramp…

After I put all the Christmas decorations away I realized that I was missing the lights most of all. So I dug around in the lights box and found a small string that would wrap around my lantern. Just the perfect amount of cheer for that corner! Who can’t use a bit of extra cheer?

A soft glow for the lantern

January 14th – Name the towns you lived in before you were 20. “I lived on the farm until I got married at age 18. We started our married life in Greensburg PA. We only lived there 1 month. We went to a big farm house near Youngwood, PA, where we lived for a year. Rented a small house on the top of Youngwood hill where you were born.” I don’t know where the house in Greensburg was, but I drive past the two Youngwood houses frequently!

Calendar Inspiration –  Slow down and take your time – don’t let anyone rush you! You will still reach your destination.

Today was Joe’s birthday, so I took his card and his favorite M&M’s (Brownie bite M&M’s) for him. He says he’s going to eat one a day. What was that old Lays commercial? Bet you can’t eat one! We’ll see how that goes. Happy birthday Joe! Here’s to many, many more!

I made a few cheese sticks for lunch, and now I’m having a cup of hot tea and listening to Rick Steves’ Europe. It’s a cloudy, rainy day, and when I was sitting upstairs in my living room (seldom do that) it struck me how cozy the little deer look ‘eating’ from the tree. I have a very small string of blue battery-operated lights on it, and I love the effect.

Not sure if I mentioned that I stopped to browse at L&L Fleatique the other day, and added a small wooden block to my snowflake corner. I’ve been eyeing it for several months, and it was half price. So — it came home with me!

Not entirely sure which day the furniture is getting moved at Nate’s – so I’m just on standby for when it does. I’m still trying to work out some snags in my mind about my newest writing project – coming close but still uncertain. I’ll work on that this weekend..

Hmmmm….

January 13th – Did your mother work outside the home? “She worked from daylight until bedtime keeping us in homemade clothes. She worked in the garden during the summer months. We canned hundreds of jars of fruit & vegetables each year. We were a family of 8, which takes a lot of work.”

Calendar inspiration today is ”  Brighten someone’s day with an unexpected kindness.” Anyone who knows me well knows that one of my favorite saying is “It’s better to be kind than to be right.” Kelly made me a tee-shirt with that saying on it.

January 12, 2022

I was right – by the middle of the day, the driveway was clear of snow, as was most of the yard. I spent the day cleaning and doing little chores that I thought about as the day went on.

In the mail I received a note from my friend Mary Ann Howe’s sister-in-law (Bernie). Mary Ann was formerly a phone operator at Smail’s. She was a good friend and we kept in touch. I sent her a Christmas card, and had a strange feeling when I was writing it out. Bernie sent a nice letter and told me that Mary Ann had passed away last year. I was sorry I hadn’t known. Bernie sent me one of Mary Ann’s angel charms. Mary Ann loved angels, and I have several that belonged to her that she shared over the years. So let this little post be a tribute to her friendship.

The idea is to tell your worries to the angel. She will carry them to God, who will listen and comfort.
I attached the angel charm to my snowflake bracelet.

After I finished my day of cleaning, I did the ironing and then a load of towels. They are in the dryer. I sat down for a few minutes to open the mail and see what was on TV this evening. I’m listening to Rick Steve’s Europe, as I’m getting tired of Hallmark reruns!

Chillin’ out – or warming up! I have the candle lit – top right.

Kathy brought me over a poinsettia from their Christmas service at church – I think I mentioned that. But it’s so very unique in color that I decided to share a picture. I’ve never seen one with this coloring. Very stunning!

I want to take a minute to wish my Skunk Hollow Cousin Beth a very happy birthday! And it’s also her daughter Sabrina’s birthday! Wishing a special day of celebration to both of them! Sending hugs, love, and happiness to both mother and daughter!

January 12 – What did your father do for a living? “My father went to Greensburg & worked for a wealthy family as their chauffeur. He went into the army & fought in WWI. He was gassed with mustard gas & wasn’t healthy after that. He bought a farm along with Uncle Edd. Besides the farm work, he worked at a big feed mill where they ground grain & made flour & also animal feed. He later did road work for South Mahoning Twp. He never applied for a veterans pension. He was eligible.”

Today’s calendar inspiration – Keep an open mind for unexpected Joy – you never know when good things will surprise you.

Yesterday’s vacation destination was … Pedestal Rock (Ozarks) in ARKANSAS. Beautiful view! Other things to do would be touring Johnny Cash’s boyhood home, the Inland Maritime Museum, historic driving tours, Helena Civil War Tour, and the Ozark Mountain Waterfalls.

I did something this morning I don’t think I’ve ever done before – simply because I am very strict with myself. I got up to a light coating of snow on the driveway. Normally I would have bundled up early and cleared it. I looked at the crazy cold temps and said, “naaaa.” I did my treadmill, got ready for work, and just slowly crept up the driveway. No problem. It was mostly cleared off from the sun by the time I got home, but still a few snowy spots. Hoping it warms up enough to melt the rest. It was just very cold. I don’t have to go out again until Thursday morning. Nate sent me this picture this morning, and I think this summer when Kelly is here for a few days I may try to duplicate this. It would be perfect for me!

Kitchen knife holder – made from books!

After work and a bowl of soup I met Nate at the house and started in doing some cleaning again. They have a lot moved and a lot cleaned. Today I did the small furniture pieces that were already there, scrubbed the washer and dryer, and wiped down the walls and door in the laundry room. Jen should be all set to start putting things away. Nate and Dave painted Chrissy’s room and it’s very pretty. All that’s left to paint is the baseboards and the door/window trim. She’s very excited!

My niece Sarah shared her son’s journey – He was born with a left clubbed foot, and has had casts since he was two weeks old! Today he had surgery to start the correction process. The surgery went well and the doctor was pleased. The staff at Children’s Hospital were loving and efficient and supportive. It will be a long journey but with the incredible staff taking care of Wyatt he is in excellent hands – and God is so good! Please pray for Wyatt as he continues this journey – and for Sarah and the entire family who loves and takes care of him!
